Abigail Update

Abigail is fine tonight, but she had another "incident" at school today. I won't go into all the details; however,  it was very similar to what happened last time, and we ended up in the ER again. The neurologist warned us that it was likely to happen again, so it wasn't a shock...just a disappointment, since we were really hoping and praying that it was a one-time situation.

We saw a different doctor this time in the ER, and we were really glad we had. He doesn't think that Abigail is having seizures at all. He thinks she's having "complex migraines" because most of what she goes through when this happens is typical of migraines and atypical of seizures. For example: she has vision problems before the headache starts--which is a migraine indicator--and seizures don't come with any sort of warning. Also, she gets a headache and she gets sick to her stomach, neither of which is typical of a seizure. He also gave us more information on the results of Abigail's EEG than we had gotten from any other doctor thus far, including the neurologist we saw in Bismarck. We feel much more informed now than we have from any of our doctor visits up until now.

So, we're still not putting Abigail on seizure medication. We remain in a "wait and watch" holding pattern -- we will take the recommended over-the-counter medication to school to have on hand for Abigail, and as soon as she starts having symptoms, she'll take the medication and call me. I'll pick her up and get her home as quickly as possible and put her to bed. The hope is that the medication will hold off the actual migraine until we can get her to bed to sleep it off.

Kevin had migraines when he was a teenager, and Kevin's mom had very severe migraines (she even ended up in the hospital a couple of times because of them), so we're not surprised by this diagnosis. When we left the ER today, the doctor told us, "She'll go home and sleep until supper time, and then she'll get up and have a normal appetite and be fine." And he was right -- she's just fine after her nap and already talking about what she'll do at school tomorrow.

Susan & Family, This sounds more optimistic. Something you can get a handle on. You are in our thoughts and prayers as always. Keep this doctor!

Love,
Patti

Hang in there Abigail! Keeping my fingers crossed that this doctor is right and that it is just migrain related!
